The Carol, the Carter and the Collectors. A talk by Irene Shettle

Irene Shettle follows the journey of the Christmas carol “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” from its 19th century origins in Philadelphia to its publication in England nearly fifty years later with a new tune and arrangement in 1906.
Her talk focuses on the life and music of Henry Garman, the Surrey farm labourer who introduced two important local folksong collectors, the Rev John Broadwood and Ralph Vaughan Williams,
to the ballad which was to form the basis of the well-loved tune which is now widely sung at Christmas every year.

The Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir Concert

Come along to The Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir Concert, in aid of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices
The Choir was formed on 1st September 1966, following Cardiff RFC’s 35-0 defeat of Cardiff & District.
The choir changed its name in 2000 to become the Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir, helping to raise the profile of the choir and perpetuate the name of the Arms Park.
They have appeared on television on numerous occasions.

The Back to Nature Garden

Time: During normal Garden opening times til Dec 2020
The new Back to Nature Garden for children at Wisley was officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge on 10 September.
Fun play elements featured in Back to Nature Garden include features from the original garden at RHS Chelsea, such as the hollow log and boulders from the waterfall, as well as the wildflower meadow, hidden burrow and rolling hill from RHS Hampton.
Brand new features for Wisley include trampolines surrounded by trees, two treehouses, linked via a walkway with slides, and a living willow pod. Come on down to Wisley and let the fun begin!
Book a time slot for busy weekend visits at no extra cost.

Folded and Moulded – Pleating and Draping in Fashion

Chertsey Museum’s new fashion exhibition, Folded and Moulded, examines beautiful examples of pleating and drapery in women’s fashions from the Olive Matthews Collection.
Themed sections relating to wealth and status, ancient influences, decorative appeal and practical pleating and draping allow the exploration of this subject from all angles.
Garments date from the 18th century to the 2000s and include a beautiful evening gown by Madame Grès, pieces by Issey Miyake, Mariano Fortuny, Balmain and Ossie Clark
as well as a rare and lavish Aesthetic tea gown by Liberty of London. The Collection’s important 1780 wedding ensemble, featuring dress, petticoat, hat and shoes is included.
