Additional Information:
Macbeth is a play about fear. When first performed in 1606 belief in witches and supernatural intervention in the governance of the realm were a given, and Shakespeare’s tale of political ambition, betrayal
and murder would have held a real sense of immediacy and danger for the audience. To this day the play retains an aura of superstition, especially in theatrical circles.
At its deeper level Macbeth raises universal existential questions – at its simplest it can be as scary as The Woman in Black.
